President Serzh Sargsyan participated at the session of the Council of CSTO

President Serzh Sargsyan, who is in Moscow on a working visit, participated today at the session of the Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

The session started with the meeting of the CSTO Heads of State in a closed format and later was followed by the meeting in the extended format.

Chairmanship of the Organization was passed on from Belarus to Kazakhstan.

The Parties signed also 23 documents, which are aimed at the improvement of the collective security structure, enhancement of the Organization’s potential, deepening of military and military-technical cooperation.

At the session adopted were important decisions pertinent to the modernization of the special units of the CSTO Rapid Response force, establishment of the system of information security, and common steps aimed at the fight against illegal trafficking of drugs and terrorism, and countering threats and challenges originating from Afghanistan.

Changes were made also to the Charter of the CSTO aimed at the internal institutional strengthening of the Organization. The program on the celebrations in 2012 of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Collective Security Treaty and 10th anniversary of the CSTO was also adopted.

After the CSTO Council meeting, President Serzh Sargsyan will participate at the meeting of the CIS Heads of State.
