President Sargsyan received NATO Secretary General's Special Representative

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia Robert Simmons, who has arrived to Armenia to participate in the consequence management field exercise “Armenia-2010”. The exercise is conducted in the framework of Armenia’s cooperation with NATO. President Sargsyan expressed gratitude to Mr. Simmons, who is concluding his mission, for his personal contribution, years-long and efficient work aimed at the development of Armenia-NATO cooperation.

Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of NATO’s assistance in the reformation of the Armenian Armed Forces and noted that the 2009 stage of the Individual Partnership Action Plan has been positive also for the reformation processes. The President of Armenia spoke with satisfaction about cooperation in the area of civil defense and said that successful conduct of “Armenia-2010” civil emergency exercise is a good example of efficient cooperation. According to Serzh Sargsyan, for Armenia, which is situated in a seismic zone, such exercises are essential. “I believe that “Armenia-2010” will allow to practice disaster response mechanisms and capabilities and to enhance co-operation in emergency situations,” Serzh Sargsyan noted.

According to Robert Simmons, the “Armenia-2010” field exercises have been very well-organized, which in his opinion, was the result of excellent work on both sides.

“Planning of civil response in emergency situations is one of important areas of our cooperation. We pay special attention to that area and this exercise proves it. I believe, we will be conducting this kind of exercises on the next stage of the IPAP as well. I would also like to thank you on behalf of the Secretary General of NATO for your participation in our peace-keeping missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo. With this regard, it is very important to see you in Lisbon at the NATO Summit where essential decisions regarding future actions will be taken,” said NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia Robert Simmons.
