President Serzh Sargsyan received the delegation of the Canada-Armenia Friendship Group of the Canadian Parliament
Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received the delegation of the Canada-Armenia Friendship Group of the Canadian Parliament.
Serzh Sargsyan welcomed the visit of the Group to Armenia and noted that Armenia and Canada efficiently cooperate in bilateral as well as multilateral formats and such cooperation constitutes a strong base for the full utilization of the existing potential. In this context, the President also highlighted the importance of invigorating the inter-parliamentary interaction.
“Canada is important for us as a powerful economy and democracy; also as a country which has been congenial to our compatriots.
Canada has become their second motherland, where they manifested their best qualities, thus serving Canada as well as Armenia,” the President of Armenia said.
The parties discussed also the process of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide. President Sargsyan hailed the decision of Canada’s federal and legislative authorities to recognize in 2006 the Armenian Genocide. “We are grateful to the Parliament and Government of Canada for their position regarding the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. I would like to stress once again that Canada is one of those few nations where the Parliament and the Government have been unanimous on this issue,” said the President of Armenia.
The Chairman of the Canada-Armenia Friendship Group Harold Albrecht concurred with President Sargsyan’s opinion regarding close Armenian-Canadian relations and active cooperation and underscored that the large Armenian community of Canada is another proof of that friendship. According to Mr. Albrecht, the Armenians make significant contribution to the development of economic, political, cultural and all other areas of Canada’s life.
The Canadian parliamentarian also informed that the Group chaired by him conducts activities not only in the framework of the Parliament but all over the country to raise the Armenian Genocide awareness and supporting the process of its international recognition.
At the meeting the parties stressed the necessity of enhancing the Armenian-Canadian cooperation in all areas and encouragement of Canadian investments in the Armenian economy which, according to the interlocutors, will also introduce new business culture. They also stressed the importance of using Canadian experience in the areas of mining, agriculture, and spoke about enhancing cooperation in the areas of education and culture.
