Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received the Head of the IMF mission to Armenia Mark Lewis and the Resident Representative for Armenia Guillermo Tolosa.

Welcoming Mr. Lewis, the President of Armenia said, “I am happy to see you again, here in Armenia. I know that you have had productive discussions in the government and the Central Bank. I also know that the discussions have been concluded and you’ve reached agreement on the programs based on certain prerequisites. I believe, 2010 will be a pretty active year for Armenia’s economic recovery, at least the first four months of this year show such tendencies. At the same time, this year we should be able to continue with the implementation of the reforms.”

Mark Lewis informed the President of Armenia on the agreements reached between the International Monetary Fund and the Government of Armenia, particularly on a three-year program implemented by the IMF staff on “Prolonged financing” and “Prolonged use of IMF loans”.

At the meeting discussed were also issues related to the development of the Armenian economy and main directions of the economic policy. According to Mark Lewis, “Although the economic conditions are not very good yet, the Armenian economy is recovering step by step. The financial sector is strong, state finances are well-managed, and the volume of foreign transfers is increasing.”

The Head of the IMF mission to Armenia presented to Serzh Sargsyan the parameters of the financial assistance envisaged by the Program and options of its utilization after the Program will have been approved by the IMF Board.
