President Serzh Sargsyan presided over the 11th meeting of the Presidential Council on Nuclear Safety
Today, the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan presided over the 11th meeting of the Presidential Council on Nuclear Safety which took place at the Government’s Reception House.
The President of Armenia made welcoming remarks and briefly touched upon the prospects of the energy system development in Armenia.
Serzh Sargsyan noted that the constant upgrading of the Armenian Nuclear Power Station’s safety has always been a priority for the Armenian Government. “I studied the documents prepared by the Safety Control Board and the management of the NPS and, I believe, much has already been done. Certainly, it would be desirable if the procedures aimed at the enhancement of safety at all levels were completed simultaneously. Unfortunately, it’s not possible. However, we are genuinely interested in accomplishing all the envisaged tasks on time,” President Sargsyan said.
The President also said that although safe operation of the NPW is a top priority, the Government of Armenia pays equal attention to the issue of decommissioning the block. Serzh Sargsyan said that the preliminary works have already started and a corresponding plan has been devised which is included in the Armenia-EU approved plan of actions. According to the President, these steps would be carried out concurrently with the construction and operation of the new energy block.
Serzh Sargsyan spoke also about the key issues discussed at the Washington Nuclear Safety Summit, particularly the issue of control over the radioactive waste.
The President of Armenia spoke also about the issues related to Armenia’s deeper integration in the regional energy markets and more active participation in the regional energy projects.
The President of Armenia thanked the members of the Council for their significant contribution to safe operation of the NPW. Serzh Sargsyan spoke also about the changes made in the Council, informing that it has been augmented with two new members.
The Chairman of the Presidential Council of Nuclear Energy Adolf Berghofer said that he was impressed with the works conducted at the Armenian Nuclear Power Station and the high level of cooperation between the management of the Station and international donor organizations.
Later, the Director General of the NPS made a report on the operations of the NPS. The Chairman of the State Committee on Nuclear Safety Regulation gave an account of the conducted works. The reports were followed by wide-range discussions.
