President Serzh Sargsyan met with members of the Public Council
Today, President Serzh Sargsyan met with members of the Public Council. This is the second meeting of the President of Armenia with the members of the Council after its has been fully formed. At the meeting discussed were problems registered by the Council in the areas of agriculture and information technologies, as well as their possible solutions. The Ministers of Agriculture and Economy of Armenia also were present at the meeting.
President Sargsyan said that he learned from the Chairman of the Council Vazgen Manoukian and the media that the Council has been working hard in a number of areas, ranging from the Armenian-Turkish relations to the improvement of the quality of TV programs. “The important thing is that these topics are discussed extensively and go down an impressive chain which starts with introduction of the issues and concludes with discussions. I attach great importance to the fact that the Public Council not only flags the issues but also proposes solutions. It is important, since the problems of our society are noticeable for many; however it is one thing is to detect them, and quite another to offer solutions,” the President of Armenia said.
The participants of the meeting raised concern that the total of the undeveloped lands expands each year, and this problem was noted as a priority issue in the area of agriculture. According to the experts, it can endanger development prospects for this branch of our economy. The working group of the Council presented to the President of the Republic a proposal on developing cooperative management in the area of agriculture and justified it based on the results of their research. It was also stated that through the development of voluntary cooperative management it will be possible to have efficient agriculture as well as to solve the problem of keeping the farmers on the land and preserving villages.
The President of Armenia said that that problem should be viewed in the context of a much emphasized strategy of a equal development of lands, which means that rural areas should get the opportunity to utilize their potential, and in this particular case also in the area of agriculture. According to President Sargsyan the state is also interested in setting its priorities through these discussions, correcting the course when necessary, and for creating conditions for the farmers so that land toiling would not look like an unrewarding effort.
At the meeting discussed were also the issues of the internet quality and tariffs which, according to the members of the Public Council, impede the development of the information technologies and hinder the accessibility of the internet services for the public.
President Sargsyan mentioned that a slowdown in improving quality of internet connection and availability of services may keep Armenia out of global processes and decrease the country’s opportunities for development. Thus, everything must be done to address the problem efficiently and expeditiously.
The President of Armenia proposed to summarize the expressed views on each of the discusses topics and in close cooperation with the Government to launch the second phase – formulation of concrete measures. Serzh Sargsyan also said that it should be kept in mind that the members of the Public Council work on voluntary basis because of their consideration for the country, while for the state officials it is a duty and they have to manifest the utmost responsibility toward the implementation of the steps envisaged as a result of these discussions.
President Sargsyan expressed gratitude to the members of the Public Council and wished them success in their future work.
