President Serzh Sargsyan received delegation of the Association of European Election Officials
Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received delegation of the Association of European Election Officials (AEEO), which has arrived to Armenia for the 18th annual conference of the organization.
The President of Armenia welcomed the members of the delegation, noting that bringing that event to Armenia was a good opportunity to discuss problems of the electoral system and exchange positive election experience.
“The long but inescapable road to democracy brought us to a stage in the development of the electoral system that allows to hold free and fair elections. It doesn’t mean, of course, that we have a consummate electoral system. There are many problems and we need to constantly improve our electoral system,” Serzh Sargsyan said, stressing the importance of cooperating on that issue with international organizations.
Among the reasons for deficiencies the President of Armenia noted the lack of election culture typical for the post-Soviet states. According to Serzh Sargsyan, to straighten out the existing problems it is necessary for all the structures comprising part of the election process to be completely formed.
President Sargsyan inquired from the members of the delegation on the experience of partisan and professionally formed electoral commissions, conversed with them on the topics to be discussed during the conference and on the recommendations to address them.
Representatives of the Association, who have been cooperating with Armenia for a long time, said that the improvements in our country’s election system were noticeable and expressed readiness to continue to support the processes of democratization and further development of the electoral system.
