President Serzh Sargsyan received a group of the Armenian and Azerbaijani parliamentarians and representatives of intelligentsia
Today, President Serzh Sargsyan received a group of the Armenian and Azerbaijani parliamentarians and representatives of intelligentsia, who upon receiving the endorsement of the two Presidents negotiated by the representative of the Russian Federation Mikhail Svydkoy and the Ambassadors of Armenia and Azerbaijan to Russia, initiated a one day joint visit to Stepanakert, Yerevan, and Baku.
Welcoming the guests, President Sargsyan expressed confidence that they came to Armenia with the sincere desire for peace, sense of responsibility towards next generations and need to establish mutual understanding between the two peoples.
“We are situated in a unique region, which is unique for its cultural variety and geopolitical importance. Unfortunately, our region is also abundant with unresolved issues and only the atmosphere of mutual trust and cooperation will allow us to aspire for a better future for our peoples. For this reason, we have always believed that it is possible to find solutions to the most difficult problems through a dialogue and cooperation. We view and welcome the initiative of our Ambassadors from that very point of view,” – the President of Armenia said. He highlighted the efforts of the Russian representative Mikhail Svydkoy in this endeavor.
The participants to the mission spoke with the President of Armenia about the necessity to establish contacts between the Armenian and Azerbaijani societies and ways to achieve that.
The Ambassadors of Armenia and Azerbaijan to the Russian Federation noted that the objective of their civic initiative was to create opportunities for the parties to interact and establish mutual trust. According to the Ambassador of Azerbaijan in Russia, it is time to make a step forward in public diplomacy, engaging in this initiative representatives of the intellectual and cultural circles of the two countries, who can find a common ground during their contacts.
According to the initiators of this mission, implementation of civil initiatives, which can be conducted in parallel with the political dialogue on the highest level, will allow to establish regular contacts, while atmosphere of mutual trust would be a good contribution to the resolution of the NK conflict.
For the purpose of establishing the atmosphere of tolerance between the two peoples the participants to the meeting stressed the necessity of re-establishing the once existing friendly and partnership relations between the representatives of the older generation, bringing into that interaction also younger people.
After being hosted by the President of Armenia, the group left for Baku to meet with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev. Before that the group visited Stepanakert and met with the President of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic Bako Sahakian.
