Today President Serzh Sargsyan met with the team of the Armenian schoolchildren who participated at the 7th International Olympiad of Russian Language and Literature in Moscow.
Nine schoolchildren from Armenia showed at the competition excellent results and collected a record number of awards.
Congratulating the participants of the Olympiad with this outstanding achievement, the President of Armenia said, “I want you to view this as a beginning of new achievements: multiple your knowledge and achieve new heights. This victory is important not only for you but for all of us. It proves once and again that Armenia has a huge intellectual potential and what is not less important, that potential is not limited by age.
Your victory holds additional importance: the geography of participation was pretty extensive – Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor, Goris, and Abovian which means that the intellectual potential is not confined exclusively to Yerevan – one can get excellent knowledge in the regions too.
It is also significant that all the participants received awards. If we put it in sport language it means that our reserve team is pretty strong too, it means knowledge is extensive.
I am confident that you do not doubt even for a moment that great part of this victory belongs to your teachers, as well as to the curators of the team. I express my gratitude to all those who are doing their job without grumbling or nagging. Despite many difficulties they are devoted to their high mission.
I am also confident that your example will inspire many others to study foreign languages. The most important thing, of course, is a perfect command of the mother tongue, but is also very important to command foreign languages. For a young person it means to be competitive and be able to directly benefit from the treasury of universal thought.
I want you to trust your own abilities, I want you to uphold the victor’s spirit, and through you I want our society to have it too. When you or other students participate in different world competitions and win, it becomes an excellent example to follow. I am sure, and this is not exaggeration, that you are the role-models, hero-students of our time. You signify those who can win in this world thanks to their knowledge. We must do everything so that each student becomes like you. We will do everything so that the schoolchildren and students, who win at the world Olympiads, receive special attention of the state – I will be inviting each of the winners here, I will shake their hands, and later when it is shown on TV I will tell my grandchild that she should be just like them. I will tell it also to my friends. This is the right way.
I wish you further success. I wish you double your knowledge, since this is only the beginning. And please remember this: to be a winner is praiseworthy but at the same time it means much responsibility because the winners are constantly under scrutiny. You should understand it and throughout your life serve an example that knowledge brings success. Pass it on to all your friends that in Armenia you are rooting the culture of winning through knowledge, and that in Armenia those who win through knowledge will always be different from others.”
The team told the President about their experiences and impressions of the Olympiad. It was noted that the international Olympiads are taking place once in three years, and that this one gathered 306 participants from 36 countries.
At the conclusion of the meeting, each of the participants took a picture with the President as a souvenir.
