Today President Serzh Sarkissian met with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliev at the “Baltic Star” hotel in Saint Petersburg

Today President Serzh Sarkissian met with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliev at the “Baltic Star” hotel in Saint Petersburg.

This is the first meeting of Serzh Sarkissian with his Azeri counterpart since becoming the President of Armenia. The meeting of the Presidents was preceded by the meeting of the Foreign Minister of the two countries which lasted nearly one hour.

The meeting started in the presence of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Azerbaijan Edward Nalbandian and Elmar Memedyarov, Co-Chairmen of the OSCE Minsk Group Yuri Merzlyakov, Matthew Bryza, and Bernard Fassier, as well as the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Adrzei Kasprzyk. Later, the meeting of the Presidents was continued in face to face format. Negotiations lasted for one hour and were continued once again with the participation of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Minsk Group Co-Chairs, and the Special Representative.

The Armenian side assesses the results of the first Sarkissian-Aliev meeting in Saint Petersburg as constructive. During the introductory meeting the two sides presented their views regarding the process of negotiations and instructed the Ministers of Foreign Affairs to continue the negotiations in the cooperation with the Minsk Group Co-Chairmen. Presidents Sarkissian and Aliev want the Co-Chairs to continue their work on bringing the positions of the parties closer. It’s been agreed that the Minsk Group Co-Chairmen will visit the region in the end of June. The precise dates of the visit will be fixed shortly.

The meeting of Presidents Sarkissian and Aliev was followed by another meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
