By the invitation of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitri Medvedev, today President arrived on a working visit to Sochi.

Welcoming the President of Armenia, the President of Russia noted that the meetings of the Presidents of the two states are being conducted on a regular basis,”Last time we had a comprehensive meeting during your visit to Moscow. That visit was very productive and the dialogue continues now.”

He said that the countries-members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization would present their position regarding the events in the South Ossetia at the end of the week, during the summit in Moscow.

The President of Armenia in his remarks stated, in particular, the following,”Working meetings between the Presidents of Armenia and Russia in Sochi have become a good tradition. This is a nice opportunity to discuss in a quiet atmosphere issues pertaining to bilateral, as well as multilateral relations. Besides, in a couple of days Armenia will be assuming the chairmanship of the CSTO. Quite recently “Rubezh 2008” military exercises and a meeting of the Ministers of Defense of the CSTO have been conducted in Armenia, and tomorrow the summit of the Secretaries of the National Security Council of the CSTO will open in Yerevan.

Here, in Sochi, I would like to talk about economic issues, issues of further strengthening and deepening of our relations in the framework of the CSTO and, of course, the current situation in the Caucasian region. This is our first meeting after the events in South Ossetia, Abkhazia, and Georgia. I would like to once again express condolences to the citizens of Russia on the occasion of death of the peacekeepers. I am sorry that the events have taken this turn and hope that the consequences of the humanitarian disaster will be speedily eliminated. By the way, two weeks ago we invited schoolchildren from South Ossetia to Armenia. We try to do our best to assist in the elimination of the consequences.”

During the private conversation, the Presidents of the two countries noted with satisfaction the high level of political dialogue and cooperation in the framework of strategic partnership, which emanates from the interests of two brotherly peoples.
