President Vahagn Khachaturyan received Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset
President of the Republic Vahagn Khachaturyan received the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, who is on an official visit to Armenia.
Welcoming the guest, President Khachaturyan expressed satisfaction with the high-level and regular dialogue and mutual visits between Armenia and the Council of Europe, noting that this year has been marked by an active agenda.
“I am pleased to welcome You. Your visit to Armenia is of great importance. It is noteworthy that the first European institution we began cooperating with after gaining independence was the Council of Europe. I remember how the work done in the 1990s inspired us and instilled a deep sense of responsibility.
This cooperation continued when we became a full member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Accordingly, we assumed commitments, which we have fulfilled and continue to fulfill.
In this context, I would like to express my gratitude for Your consistency and support, especially regarding the strengthening of democratic values,” said President Khachaturyan in his welcoming remarks.
Alain Berset thanked the President for the warm reception. “I am truly delighted to visit Armenia. This visit highlights the ongoing support we have always extended to Armenia. We are genuinely impressed by the progress Your country has made over the past 30 years,” he stated.
During the meeting, the sides discussed the close cooperation between Armenia and the Council of Europe in the process of consolidating democratic institutions. In this context, the importance of comprehensive reforms undertaken by the Armenian authorities aimed at upholding democratic values, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental human and civil rights and freedoms were highlighted.
Touching upon the regional security situation, President Khachaturyan presented Armenia’s position and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to achieving stable and lasting peace.
The President emphasized that Armenia remains fully committed to its international obligations and is ready for constructive cooperation aimed at strengthening stability and security in the region.
Alain Berset, in turn, reiterated the Council of Europe’s readiness to continue supporting Armenia in strengthening democratic institutions, developing the justice system, and protecting human rights. He emphasized the importance of stable and inclusive reforms as the foundation of a democratic society and noted that the Council of Europe will continue to be a reliable partner in that process.
