President Armen Sarkissian had a telephone conversation with the Acting Minister of Defense Vagharshak Harutyunyan, now in Moscow.
The Acting Minister of Defense informed the President of the Republic of Armenia about Azerbaijan’s recurrent violation of Armenia’s border in the Gegharkunik region and capture of Armenian servicemen carrying out engineering works and noted that all measures are being taken to return them urgently.
The border situation was touched upon, and the Acting Minister said that his visit to Moscow was also connected with settling the situation.
The President of the Republic considered pressing to undertake necessary measures, implement the opportunities of all the relevant bodies, the Armenian Armed Forces, and diplomacy to return our servicemen. At the same time, he noted that everything should be done to exclude such cases, to ensure the security of our servicemen and citizens, and the inviolability and proper protection of the border.
The President considers the actions of Azerbaijan’s Armed Forces a clear violation of the norms of international law that requires the most decisive response and assessment of the international community. While taking appropriate steps, he stressed the need to continue working actively with international partners.
