The President of the Republic and the Human Rights Defender discussed the concept of creating a security zone in Syunik

Today, the President of the Republic Armen Sarkissian met with Arman Tatoyan, the Human Rights Defender of Armenia.

The President and the Human Rights Defender discussed the work carried out to return the captives and find the missing.

During the meeting, the Human Rights Defender presented the President his concept of creating a demilitarized security zone to guarantee the rights of the population of Syunik. Arman Tatoyan emphasized that the border-related work is carried out in the conditions of Azerbaijan's open threat of war and the Azerbaijani highest authorities’ state policy of hatred of Armenians. Besides that, the servicemen of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces fire in the immediate vicinity of the villages in the Syunik region of Armenia, which seriously endangers the residents’ right to life and their physical safety. From the viewpoint of the residents’ rights, the presence of the Azerbaijani military, signboards and flags on the roads between the communities of Syunik have caused provocations and anxiety. There are also gross violations of property rights.

President Sarkissian stressed that there is no official demarcation and delimitation between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which means that the process of determining the state borders is at least legally uncertain at the moment. Added to this are the violations of the rights of RA citizens in Syunik or their significant danger.
