On the evening of December 15, President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian met with a group of intellectuals, representing the spheres of science, education, and culture: Director of the NAS Institute of History Ashot Melkonyan, Director of the NAS Institute of Literature after M. Abeghyan Vardan Devrikyan, Director of the NAS Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law Gevorg Poghosyan, Dean of the YSU Faculty of Oriental Studies Ruben Melkonyan, Director of the “Armenian Encyclopedia” Publishing House SNCO Hovhannes Ayvazyan, Director of the Charents Museum of Literature and Art Karo Vardanyan, Director of the National Library of Armenia Anna Chulyan, Founder and Head of the “Hover” State Chamber Choir, and Rector of Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan Sona Hovhannisyan, Head of the G. Gurdjieff Folk Instruments Ensemble Levon Eskenian, and historian and archivist Amatuni Virabyan.
The participants of the meeting presented their opinions and views on the current situation in the country, and touched upon the ways to resolve it.
Speaking about the painful losses suffered during the war, the lack of trust, and the current crisis, the intellectuals noted that, as a people and a state, we have no choice but to get out of the situation with joint forces. To advance, it is first necessary to soberly and accurately analyze and evaluate the situation, compile the list of challenges, accept the existing realities, and think about efficient ways-out of the situation.
President Sarkissian especially emphasized the need for systemic solutions, noting in particular: “We must renounce wishful thinking, renounce lies and falsehood, face the truth, learn from today's mistakes and advance, making efficient steps.” The President noted that we must have a vision of development, strategy, and program for all spheres: “We have a long way to go. We must build our state institutions and strengthen our statehood through daily, consistent work and discipline.”
The participants of the meeting noted that the role of the Presidential Institution and the President of the Republic is crucial in overcoming the current situation.
