Prospects of cooperation in the nuclear area: President Sarkissian met with the Commissioner of the Nuclear Regulation Authority of Japan

President Armen Sarkissian, who is in Japan on a working visit, was today the Nuclear Regulation Authority of Japan and met with the Commissioner Toyoshi Fuketa.

“There are quite a few countries in the world which possess know-how and knowledge about nuclear energy and its management, about the measures related to nuclear safety. Japan is one of those few countries,” President Sarkissian underscored. “It’s a very sensitive issue for our country: Armenia, just as Japan, has a nuclear power station and the problem is the same: How to manage nuclear fuel and nuclear waste.”

The Head of the Nuclear Regulation Authority of Japan noted that they constantly refurbish nuclear power stations and equipment, bringing them in line with the risks, and their experience in this area can be useful and instructive. He said that they were ready to share with the partners from other countries the experience and lessons gathered from the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, particularly their experience related to the upgrading the security of the NPP.

The parties discussed also opportunities to protect against natural disasters, regulations of nuclear safety, management of nuclear fuel and nuclear waste, and other pertinent issues. President Sarkissian stressed the importance of cooperation in the area of natural disaster prevention, elimination of consequences, and experience exchange. They agreed on reciprocal visits and exchange programs.
