Biometric passports and identification cards modernization process discussed in Presidency
Today, the President of the Republic of Armenia held a consultative meeting on the progress in the activities carried out under the international tender for granting rights to conclude a concession agreement for issuing biometric passports and ID cards, introducing an automated system of modernized infrastructure for issuance of public certificates and provision of relevant services in Armenia.
Attended by the Prime Minister of Armenia, the members of a government-established task force and stakeholder representatives, the meeting discussed the need for having biometric passports and ID cards and an automated system of modernized infrastructure for issuance of public certificates and provision of relevant services, the advantages of the new international standards-compliant system, the specificity of biometric passports, the measures to take with a view to ensuring a smooth transition to mandatory biometric passports, etc.
Task Force Coordinator, Chief Adviser to Prime Minister Edward Nersisyan briefed the President on the key points of technical requirements for new biometric passports and ID-cards in accordance with the standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), as well as the obligations and rights set forth under the draft concession agreement and the timetable of the competition.
