President received the rector of the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Roberto Markarian
President Serzh Sargsyan received today the Rector of the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Roberto Markarian.
Welcoming the guest to our country, the President of Armenia noted that it is very gratifying that one of the most prominent educational establishments of the friendly Uruguay is led by our compatriot who has also made a considerable contribution to the development of the educational system of Uruguay and is highly respected in that country.
At the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the possibilities and prospects of developing the Armenian-Uruguayan cooperation in the area of education. Speaking about the Agreement on Cooperation between the Yerevan State University and the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to be signed on October 3 in the framework of Roberto Markarian’s visit, the President of Armenia and the Rector of the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay stressed the importance of shaping active cooperation between Armenia and Uruguay in the area of education and expressed hope that it will become an impetus for the future cooperation between the educational systems of the two countries and for the implementation of exchange programs.
Speaking about the friendly relations between Armenia and Uruguay based on mutual respect and trust, the interlocutors concurred that the role of the Armenian community of Uruguay in the deepening of the interstate relations and invigoration of cooperation in the areas of mutual interest is prominent.
The President recalled warmly his visit to Uruguay in July 2014, his meetings with the highest leadership of the country and the reached agreements. Serzh Sargsyan underscored that the Armenian people remember with gratitude and highly value the fact that Uruguay was the first nation to recognize the Armenian Genocide over fifty years ago. He thanked the people and the Government of Uruguay for the commemoration of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide at the state level.
Rector Roberto Markarian noted that he was also interested in the method of teaching chess in the secondary schools of Armenia and desires to implement the Armenian experience in the schools of Uruguay. Towards that end, tomorrow at the international conference to be held in Tsakhkadzor he is planning to meet with the Armenian chess players.
President Sargsyan and Rector Markarian also exchanged views on the pan-Armenian issues.
