President receives delegation of German Bundestag members
President Serzh Sargsyan today received a delegation headed by the member of the German Bundestag, Cem Özdemir, Co-Chairmen of the Alliance '90/The Greens party.
The President welcomed the guests and noted that the visit of Mr. Özdemir, a leader of a highly-influential German party and a Bundestag member, will bring its unique contribution towards strengthening of Armenian-German friendly ties and deepening of inter-parliamentary cooperation. The President mentioned that in Armenia people know about Cem Özdemir’s views on the Armenian Genocide and highly appreciate his calls to the Turkish government to condemn and recognize that crime. Welcoming the German parliamentarians’ visit to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex, the President said it was symbolic that the visit of Cem Özdemir’s delegation was taking place ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
At the meeting, the interlocutors touched upon the high-level political dialogue between Armenia and Germany which has been developing dynamically, as well as upon the present multifaceted cooperation in the areas of trade and economy, culture, education and science, defense, healthcare and in a series of other areas. The parties expressed satisfaction with the fact that the bilateral legal framework has been continuously expanding, reciprocal visits at various levels, including at parliamentary level, have intensified. The interlocutors also attached value to promoting cooperation between Armenian and German parliamentarians within the framework of parliamentary assemblies of international organizations.
At the meeting, the parties reflected upon the priorities of Armenia’s foreign policy, its domestic political situation, including the ongoing multi-sectoral reforms, as well as upon regional issues and challenges. In this context, President Serzh Sargsyan presented the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.
The interlocutors also discussed issues pertaining to the cooperation between Armenia and the European Union and to possible steps Germany could take to support it.
