President invited a meeting with the participation of the RA Minister of Education and Science and rectors of the state higher education institutions

Today, President Serzh Sargsyan invited a meeting with the participation of the RA Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotian and rectors of the higher education state institutions.

The Chairman of the Rectors’ Council, Rector of the Yerevan State University Aram Simonian presented to Serzh Sargsyan issues common for all institutions that were already discussed in the Council, avenues to solve them which, in some cases, requires state assistance. Minister Armen Ashotian and Chairman of the Rectors’ Council at the meeting reported also on the implementation of the directions given by the President of Armenia at the previous meeting held in the same format, after which the rectors of the higher education institutions presented problems existing in their respective institutions, as well as latest achievements and development programs.

Among the problems of a general nature, the rectors of the higher education institutions discussed with the President of Armenia the necessity of the adoption of the Education Code. According to the rectors, it will allow to unify and generalize the legal field for all entities and subjects who perform activities in the area of education. At the same it will allow to assemble in one code all education related laws and other legal documents. In order to discuss that issue methodically, the President of Armenia instructed to create a task group, involving in the discussions of the legal issues also representatives of the relevant commission of the National Assembly.

The participants of the meeting, among the issues facing the higher education institutions highlighted the importance of engaging young and qualified cadre, the problem of the alteration of generations at the scientific and educational institutions, as well as lack of cadre in some specialties. They discussed with President Sargsyan also issues related to the status of the state institutions and possibilities of conducting certain state-sponsored steps to ensure high quality education.

The raised issues and proposals, along with the instructions given by the President at the meeting, will be recapped by the RA Minister of Education and Science.
