There took place meeting between the President Serzh Sargsyan and the President of RF Dmitry Medvedev

Today, at the Presidential Palace there took place a private meeting between the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev who has arrived to Yerevan on a state visit. The meeting was followed by the negotiations in the extended format with the participation of the official delegations.

Welcoming the guest, the President of Armenia said, “I am confident that the first ever state visit of the President of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Armenia will usher in new stage in our relations. Strategic cooperation and partnership with the Russian Federation are in the interests of our people and we will do our best to move these relations forward.

Since 2008, we have met almost 30 times, however, this meeting is special. During those meetings we discussed, as we will today, critical issues pertinent to our relations.”

The RF President Dmitry Medvedev underscored that the current state visit could be viewed as the pinnacle of the meetings and bilateral cooperation. “The visit reflects special relations between our countries and our peoples. Those are truly relations of strategic cooperation and close partnership, based on centuries-long friendship and treaties which form the foundation of our bilateral cooperation,” said the Russian President, noting that the negotiations were conducted in the atmosphere of mutual trust which was evidenced by the agreements signed by the parties today.

The Presidents of Armenia and Russia discussed a wide range of issues pertinent to the development and strengthening of strategic partnership. They also discussed urgent regional and international issues. Serzh Sargsyan and Dmitry Medvedev spoke also about the NK peace process.

At the meeting, the Co-Chairs of the Armenian-Russian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation the Prime Minister of RA Tigran Sarkissian and RF Minister of Transportation Igor Levitin presented to the Presidents of the two countries works accomplished by the sides since the last session of the commission and pre-agreed programs. The parties also mentioned the necessity of expanding contacts in the humanitarian sphere and implementation of comprehensive and long-term programs in the areas of science, education, and culture.

Following the negotiations, the parties signed five documents:

Protocol on the Amendments to the March 16, 1995 Agreement between the Republic of Armenia and the Russian Federation on the Russian Military Base on the territory of the Republic of Armenia;

Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the Government of the Russian Federation on cooperation for the construction of new energy blocks of the Nuclear Power Station on the territory of the Republic of Armenia;

Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the Government of the Russian Federation on reciprocal establishment of Trade Representations

Executive Protocol on the implementation of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the Government of the Russian Federation on Readmission;

Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Agency for Military and Technical Cooperation (RF) and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia on cooperation in the establishment on the territory of the Republic of Armenia of licensed service centers and joint ventures for military equipment as well as maintenance and repair of military equipment.

After the singing ceremony, the Presidents of Armenia and the Russian Federation held a joint press-conference.

Afterwards, President Dmitry Medvedev handed state awards to the representatives of the faculty of the Armenian-Russian Slavonic University. Armen Darbinian, Rector of the University was awarded the Order of Friendship; Aram Grigorian, Scientific Director of the Russian Philology Institute of the University and Anahit Khachikian, the Head of Chair at the University were awarded the Pushkin Medal; the first Vice-Rector of the University Gagik Sarkissian was awarded the title of the RF Distinguished Educator.

In the second part of the day, Serzh Sargsyan and Dmitry Medvedev left for Gyumri to attend the official ceremony of unveiling of the Hill of Honor – the Memorial which symbolizes the Armenian-Russian friendship. After the ceremony, the two Presidents will return to Yerevan to participate at the unofficial summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization which commences tonight.
