The official ceremony of welcoming the President of Latvia took place at the Presidential Palace
On December 9, by the invitation of President Serzh Sargsyan the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers and Mrs. Lilita Zatlers arrived to Armenia for a three-day state visit.
Today, the official ceremony of welcoming the President of Latvia took place at the Presidential Palace and was followed by the private meeting of the two Presidents.
Welcoming his Latvian colleague in Armenia, President Sargsyan said, “This is the first official visit in the history of our two countries, however before we have had many opportunities to talk and exchange views. Intensification of the political dialogue testifies to the interest of our two countries to deepen our bilateral relations. And I view your visit to our country in that very context.”
“I am glad to be in Armenia. Latvia has practical interest and our delegation comprises also more than ten businessmen,” President Zatlers noted. He expressed confidence that negotiations with the Armenian side would be productive. “I hope that this will be the first round of our meetings, and the next will take place in Riga. I am also aware that there is a small Latvian community in Armenia. I also know that any community, no matter how small, feels comfortable in Armenia,” the President of Latvia stressed.
After the private talks, the two Presidents were joined by their delegations and the negotiations continued in the extended format.
Serzh Sargsyan said that with President Zatlers they discussed possibilities of developing cooperation in different areas and exchanged views on the issues of mutual interest. President Sargsyan once again expressed confidence that the visit of the President of Latvia would strengthen the Armenian-Latvian relations.

The two sides stressed in particular the importance of conducting encouraging policy for the business circles of the two countries in the economic area. They expressed confidence that there were goods and services in Armenia and Latvia that could find demand in each other’s markets.
The Presidents of Armenia and Latvia spoke also about the opportunities offered by the EU Eastern Partnership program, highlighting the importance of easing the process of acquiring entry visas.
