Today the newly appointed Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Armenia, Ivan Estrab (residence in Tbilisi) presented his credentials to President Serzh Sarkissian.

Congratulating the Ambassador on his nomination, the President of Armenia said, “We attached great importance to the development of bilateral relations with the Czech Republic as well as to the cooperation with you in the European structures,” He added, “Armenia considers herself a part of the European family and Eurointegration is a priority of our foreign policy.”

Stressing the high level of the political dialogue of the two states, Serzh Sarkissian observed at the same time that economic relations are lagging behind and that the trade turn over is rather insignificant. The two sides stressed the importance of exchange of information and active contacts between the businessmen of the two countries which are important for finding a common ground for cooperation.

Ambassador Estrab stressed significant interest of his country toward the South Caucasus region and toward Armenia in particular. According to the Ambassador, in the context of developing bilateral relations, the Czech side attaches great importance to the forthcoming official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Karel Schwarzenberg to Armenia. Ambassador Estrab also informed that in January 2009 the Czech Republic would be assuming the chairmanship of the European Union and was looking forward to further deepen relations with the countries of the New Neighborhood policy. Noting that Poland and Sweden have already come up with the initiative of enhancing relations with the eastern neighbors of the EU, he said that tha initiative could become a sound basis for active interaction.

Ivan Estrab also informed that the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic is planning to visit Armenia in September.
