Working visit of President Serzh Sargsyan to the Saint Petersburg
On June 4, The President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev held a meeting at the Baltic Star Hotel in Saint Petersburg.
This meeting in Saint Petersburg is the fifth meeting of Presidents Sargsyan and Aliev in the framework of the NK peace process. The meeting started with the participation of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries Edward Nalbandian and Elmar Mamedyarov, Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group Yuri Merzlyakov, Matt Bryza and Bernard Fassier, as well as the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Andrzey Kasprzyk. Later, the meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan was continued in the tête-à-tête format. The negotiations, which lasted almost two and a half hours, were continued again in the extended format.
The meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan was conducted in a constructive manner. The parties reached agreement to move forward the negotiation process. The Foreign Ministers of the two countries were instructed to continue to work with the assistance of the OSCE Co-Chairs toward the synchronization the parties’ positions and arrangement of the next meeting between the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
In the afternoon of June 4, President Serzh Sargsyan had a private meeting with the President of the Russian Federation Dmitri Medvedev.
This is the sixteenth meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Russia in bilateral as well as multilateral settings since Serzh Sargsyan was elected President of Armenia.
During the meeting, which was conducted in a cordial and genial atmosphere, discussed were issues related to the cooperation of the two strategic partners, as well as regional and international issues.
Dmitri Medvedev assessed the frequent meetings as conducive to the development of the Armenian-Russian cooperation and personal relations and noted that they facilitate defined resolutions of the concrete issues.
President Serzh Sargsyan expressed thanks for the invitation to participate at the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum and said that because of the current global economic and financial crisis the Forum has acquired an additional meaning.
President Sargsyan thanked the President of the Russian Federation for providing Armenia with the 500 million USD stabilization loan.
The parties spoke also about the Nagorno Karabakh peace process. “After the last meeting, together with our Russian colleagues we have been working over the implementation of the reached agreements. The Armenian side, with the assistance of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs has been working diligently to reach a solution to the NK problem, strenuously searching for the means to secure the right of the people of Nagorno Karabakh to live in safety on their own land, to decide their own destiny,” – the President of Armenia underlined.
The parties discussed also issues pertaining to further development of economic cooperation and implementation of the envisaged programs, transportation issues, as well political and military cooperation in the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and issues related to Rapid Deployment Forces.
Production of Aram Khtchaturian’s Spartak ballet, directed by the great choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, under the high patronage of the First Ladies of the two countries was assessed by President Serzh Sargsyan as another step toward deepening cooperation in the humanitarian area.
Later, the President of Russia invited Presidents Sargsyan and Aliev to dinner during which the parties discussed issues pertaining to the NK peace process.
On June 5, morning President Serzh Sargsyan participated at the official opening ceremony of the 13th Saint Petersburg Economic Forum.
