President Armen Sarkissian sent a letter of condolences on the demise of the founder-president of the American University of Armenia, Honorary President of the AUA Mihran Aghbabian

“I am deeply saddened by the demise of the professor, foreign member of the RA Academy of Sciences, founder-president of the American University of Armenia (AUA), Honorary President of the AUA Mihran Aghbabian.

Mihran Aghbabian was one of the best sons of our nation who through his activities always stood by the Fatherland.

One of the best experts in the world on engineering seismology and seismic construction, right after the Spitak earthquake he arrived to Armenia and provided expert assistance to the Armenian specialists.

In 1991, through his and a group of dedicated people’s initiative was created the American University of Armenia, currently one of the best higher education institutions of the region, which M. Aghbabian headed until 1997 and later became its honorary President.

Keenly aware that education was the key to Armenia’s future, Mihran Aghbabian through his activities contributed greatly to the development of education in our country.
I express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mihran Aghbabian and share their grief.”
